Rossi scores the first position with 45,677 occurrences. Testa follows on the 66th position with 7,218 occurrences. Not so bad though, as it is one of the first hundred most common surnames:

I am sure there are some famous Italians whose surname is Testa , but Arturo Testa (Milan, 1932), an appreciated baritone, is the only one I remember at the moment. I think having heard this song "Io sono il vento" recently, on the radio:

Also, Peter, you have a Pietro Testa Italian namesake, a late Baroque artist. He was born in Lucca in 1611, a Tuscan town 67,000 yards west from here, in the proximity of the coast.

Eh sì Peter, esprimere la distanza tra Firenze e Lucca in yard è piuttosto eccentrico, è vero. Ma a causa del fascino che ha questa parola anche in Italia, in parte acquistato dalla letteratura anglosassone, ho ceduto alla tentazione :)
