L4: Irregular Nouns

Nouns ending in -essa
Certain masculine nouns become feminine by replacing their final vowel with -essa.

lo studente -> la studentessa (the student)
l'oste (the host) -> l'ostessa (the hostess)
il principe (the prince) -> la principessa (the princess)
il poeta -> la poetessa (the poet)
il conte (the count) -> la contessa (the countess)
il dottore -> la dottoressa (the doctor)
il vigile (traffic cop) -> la vigilessa (meter maid)

Masculine nouns ending in –a
Some masculine nouns ending in –a are invariable. These are usually abbreviated forms.

il cinema the abbreviation of il cinematografo becomes i cinema in the plural.

Feminine nouns ending in –o
Feminine nouns usually originating from abbreviated forms ending in –o are invariable in the plural.

la radio the abbreviation of la radioricevente becomes le radio in the plural.
l’auto the abbreviation of l’automobile becomes le auto in the plural.
la foto the abbreviation of la fotografia becomes le foto in the plural.
la moto the abbreviation of la motocicletta becomes le moto in the plural.

Nouns ending in –ista, -cida, -ota, -eta, -asta, –iatra
These nouns referring to people, professions, and activities have identical masculine and feminine singular forms. In the plural use the –i ending for the masculine and the –e ending for the feminine. Nouns that can be masculine or feminine can be determined by the article.

il dentista / i dentisti / la dentista / le dentiste (the dentist / the dentists)
l'omicida (the murderer) / gli omicidi (the murderers) / l'omicida (the murderess) / le omicide (the murderesses)
il pilota / i piloti / la pilota / le pilote (the pilot / the pilots)
l'atleta / gli atleti / l'atleta / le atlete (the athlete / the athletes)
il ginnasta / i ginnasti / la ginnasta / le ginnaste (the gymnast / the gymnasts)
il pediatra / i pediatri / la pediatra / le pediatre (the pediatrician / the pediatricians)

Masculine nouns of Greek origin ending in –amma, -emma, -ama, -ema, -oma, -sma, -eta
The final –a of these nouns becomes –i in the plural.

il telegramma (the telegram) / i telegrammi (the telegrams)
il dilemma (the dilemma) / i dilemmi (the dilemmas)
il panorama (the panorama) / i panorami (the panoramas)
il sistema (the system) / i sistemi (the systems)
il diploma (the diploma) / i diplomi (the diplomas)
il fantasma (the ghost) / i fantasmi (the ghosts)
il profeta (the prophet) / i profeti (the prophets)
