THE PARTICLE CI USED AS A PRONOUN (La particella CI usata come un pronome)

The particle ci is used in a number of ways, one of which is as a pronoun. It is important that you do not confuse its use as such with ci used as a direct object pronoun.

The particle ci is used with a verb that is normally followed by the preposition a (to, of, by). In such cases, ci takes the place of the preposition and the noun or verbal phrase it relates to.

Example:

Mi piace molto l’Italia. Ci penso spesso
I like Italy a lot. I think of it often

Here, ci relates to the noun Italia.

Dicono che non vogliono andare al mare quest’anno, ma non ci credo
They say they do not want to go to the seaside this year, but I don’t believe it

In this example, ci refers to the verbal phrase non vogliono andare.
