Volere
I am very confused. Some people use vuoi for you in Italian and others use vuole or vuol....can anyone explain the difference?

Hi Donny
VUOI is the second person singular (the TU form of you) of the present tense of the verb volere. VUOLE (or VUOL, as it is sometimes pronounced) is the third person singular, but is also used in formal Italian when using the LEI form of you.
I hope this makes things a little clearer, but if you still have concerns let us know.
A presto

Re: Volere
Peter is correct.
The distinction between “[tu] vuoi” and “[lei] vuole”, when addressing a second person singular, has a lot to do with the situation. In situations involving parents, relatives, friends, colleagues/co-workers etc. or any other informal social situations, we usually use “[tu] vuoi”.
You: Ti posso dare una mano se [tu] vuoi. (I can help you, if you like.)
Co-worker: Sì, grazie. Sono molto stanco. (Yes, please. I’m so tired!)
Adults always use “[tu] vuoi” when talking to kids/children.
Student: Prof, ho dimenticato la matita. (Sir, I’m afraid I’ve forgotten my pencil.)
Teacher: [Tu] Vuoi la mia? (Do you want mine?)
In almost all formal situations (for examples, teacher/headmaster, headmaster/ teacher worker-employee/boss etc.), we usually use “[lei] vuole”.
You: [Lei] Vuole che le dia una mano, signora? (Do you want me to help you, madam?)
Old woman carrying a heavy shopping bag: Sì, grazie. La borsa è molto pesante. (Yes, please. The bag is so heavy!)

Certo, DT, però devo dire che tale errori sono molto rari, molto più rari che quelli che ho fatto con il mio povero italiano!Dylan Thomas wrote: ↑Mon May 07, 2018 8:49 pmCiao Peter.
