Accents: acuto and grave

Post by Roby » Wed Nov 01, 2006 2:30 pm

There are two different types of accent marks:
Accento acuto: "acute" accent slopes up (from left to right). It
is generally used to indicate the closed sound /e/. Ex. perché,
ventitré, etc.
Accento grave :"grave" accent slopes down. Is the most common in
Italian. Ex. caffè, bonità.
a) If a word is stressed on the last syllable it must be
accented.
( caf-fè) (bon-ità)
b) Città cheet-TA

Accent marks occur on the vowels a,e,i,o,and u under certain
circumstances.
