FromMaster the Basics Italian

Cardinal Numbers...Rules

1.The numbers from twenty on are formed by adding the first nine
numbers to each new category of tens, keeping the following
adjustments in mind.

a. The numbers venti, trenta, quaranta, etc. , drop the final vowel
of the tens numbers when combined with "uno" and "otto."
Ex. venti…twenty: ventuno…twenty-one
trenta…trenta: trentotto…thirty-eight

b. When "tre" is added on, it must be written with an accent.
Ex. venti + tre : ventitre'…twenty-three
trenta + tre: trentatre'…thirty-three

2.The plural of "mille is "mila," whereas "un milione" and "un
miliardo are pluralized in a normal way.
Ex: due milioni…two million
Tre miliardi…three billion

3. Cardinal numbers normally are placed before a noun.
Ex. tre persone…three persons
cinquantotto minuti…fifty-eight minutes

4. The other numbers are invariable, except "uno" /"una." When
you put "uno"(or any number constructed with it, e.g. ventuno etc.)
before a noun, then you must treat it exactly like the
indefinite article.
Ex: uno zio…one uncle
ventun anni…twenty-one years
trentun giorni…thirty-one days

5. "Milione"("I") and "miliardo" ("I") are always followed
by "di" before a noun.
Ex. un milione di dollari…a million dollars
due milioni di abitanti…two million inhabitants
tre miliardi di euri…three billion euros.

6. The cardinal numbers may be written as one word, However, for
larger numbers, you may need to separate them logically so that
they can be read easily.
Ex. 30.256…treamila duecento cinquantasei
(rather than: trentamiladuecentocinquantasei)
