Trying to understand nel and sul

Postby AngryHulk » Sat Jul 01, 2017 11:22 pm

I have some italian software and it has a sentence that says "Il panino e nel piatto" but I read that as "the sandwich is in the plate". Shouldn't it be "Il panino e sul piatto" or, "the sandwich is on the plate"?

Hi AngryHulk.

“Il panino è nel piatto” (you must put a grave accent on “è”; it’s a verb not a conjunction) is correct. It’s food and that’s its natural place. The preposition “on” (su, sopra) would be used if the sandwich was put on, say, a table, a napkin, etc. But let’s suppose the plate was upturned; in this case we could say, “Il panino è sul piatto.”
If it was in a lunch basket/box, in a school bag, in a rucksack, etc. you could say “in” (in, inside):

Il panino è nel cestino per il pranzo, nello zaino, etc.

I hope that helps.

Thanks for the clarification. I didn't put the accent on the e because I'm still trying to figure out how to. I have read on how to do it but none of the suggestions hlep.

It’s easy. You put the accent on the “e” when it’s a verb (“essere” = “to be”, third person singular).

Egli/lui è
Lei è
Esso/essa è

Stamattina (lui/lei) non è a scuola. Ha un po’ di febbre.
Ho comprato un divano nuovo. (Esso) E’ molto comodo.

You don’t need to put any accent on the “e” when it’s a linker.

Carlo e Maria non sono a scuola stamattina. Hanno un po’ di febbre.
Ho comprato un divano e un televisore.

Hope this helps.
