Per e Pronomi Possessivi

Post by TomPalermo » Sat Feb 13, 2016 1:18 pm

Hello,

I found the following sentence and translation.

Sta cercando le chiavi - He is looking for his keys.

Is there no need for a possessive pronoun or has the sentence been mistranslated?

Also, if one is looking for something is there no need for a preposition such as per?

Many thanks.

The translation is good, actually. A literal one could be "Sta cercando le sue chiavi", if you want to specify that the keys belongs to her.
No, in English is "looking for" but in italian we don't need the "for", so the translation for "[subject] + looking for +....." is "[pronome] + cercando + ...."
e.g. Sto cercando un bar

Is that more clear now? ;)
