Parole sante!

Post by forumuser »

Ciao amici. :D

Come tradurreste in inglese:

Parole sante?

The phrase expresses strong agreement with what another person has said. For instance:

A: Bush e' un incompetente.
B: Parole sante!

Hi forumuser

Good question! I can only think of "You can say that again!" but maybe something stronger is needed since, after all, "Parole sante!" is a bit like saying "You should be blessed for saying that".

Grazie Carlo! Forse anche:

You are SO right!

I wonder if in the past English had a similar expression with religious overtones.

Che ne dite di: Say a mouthful?

Non e' molto religioso, ovviamente. :D

There is a (British) English expression which may fit the bill.

You've hit the nail on the head there!

A:-"The problems in schools are caused by the pupils' lack of respect for the teachers"

B:-"You've hit the nail on the head there!"

Ciao everyone! :)
"Say a mouthful" is a bit different than "hit the nail on the head" or "you can say that again". I'm having a hard time defining this phrase, but "that's saying a mouthful" is a response meaning something like, 'what you said was very short, but meaningful/profound considering some other implied or stated fact'. Here is a dialogue that I can think of for "saying a mouthful" in your Bush context:

A: Bush is the most incompetent politician ever!
B: That's really saying a mouthful considering we've had a lot of incompetent politicians over the years.

Ciao JoeMama, great post! If I understand you correctly then "that's saying a mouthful" is equivalent to our:

Questo e' tutto dire = that's really a lot, that really means something

The simple "Amen" is often used to express agreement.

Non sono Australiano, ma mi piace dicere "Too right!" come un modo di essere molto d'accordo.
E un fraso Australiano per significare "Sono absolutamente d'accordo"
Gli Autraliani dicono anche "Mate"= Amico mio.
Per essempio:-
"Shall we have a beer?"
"Too right , mate!"
