Per quelli di voi che amano Montalbano, ho trovato un modo di guardare gli episodi del nuovo protagonista “Il giovane Montalbano“. Se non lo sapete, queste trasmissioni di Rai non sono disponibili fuori dall’italia (per motivi di diritti) però, dopo aver fatto un po’ do ricerca sul internet, ho trovato un canale su Youtube dove si può guardarle in segmenti di 15 minuti.

Forse sarà un po’ difficile (per noi britannici) seguire la trama perché non ci sono sottotitoli, ma mi sembra vale la pena provarci. Tenete gli occhi (anzi gli orrechi) aperti per il poliziotto che parla con Montalbano all’inizio, ha una cadenza particolare!

Molto interessante e persino più interessante è che il BBC ha asquitato la serie. Andrà in onda in primavera, di sabato sera. Poi noi brittanici riusceremo a seguirla con i sottotitoli.

That might be the cadence of the inhabitants of the Veneto or Trentino regions. It's not easy to say, because all reduces just to a cadence: he uses Italian words only, while it would be easier for me if he said something in dialect. At 03:39 he says «Mi dispiace, ma queste non sono le mie montagne» (I'm sorry, but these aren't my mountains), by which I'd think he (ie the policeman in the fiction) means he's from another mountain place. All considered, he could speak with an accent of the Trentino region, north-east Italy, where the mountains in question are the tall Alpi range.

In these videos you can hear the same accent (or, of the same type) from Maurizio Crozza, the comic actor who holds a stick in his hands:

Those people speak just that way, without exaggerating. Emilia-Romagna and Veneto/Trentino accents are the preferred ones by Tuscans (and many others), in that we consider these accents "simpatici", or able to put one in a good mood. Other accents and dialects do have other interesting/fascinating features, but people speaking romagnolo and veneto are special as to fun.

Trentini use to put a lot of "ghe" (che) and "s'è" (c'è) inside their talks, eg "cos'è ghe s'é?" (for example, at 02:19 and 03:06 in the first video) What is that is there? = cosa c'è? (What's wrong?) and this is very funny for the ears of other Italians.

Instead, the most incredible thing is that you call BBC "il BBC". BBC is absolutely feminine! It's "la BBC!". Never,
never it came to mind to me to call it il BBC! Jokes apart (don't take me seriously ), all radio and television broadcasting stations name are feminine because radio, station and television are all feminine nouns.

Sussex is il Sussex, masculine, as well as Shark (squalo)
Glasgow is feminine

In effect, all city names are feminine, as they are cities (feminine plural in Italian). La bella Glasgow sounds well, il bel Glasgow sounds a lot funny!!! Only the little red laughing man under Peter's signature can render the idea of how funny it sounds.

It's clearly a Venetian accent, at one point he even says "comandi" [command (me what you please)!], which is a common pseudo-interjection used by (continental) Venetians.
Trentin accent is also quite close to Venetian.

It is also nice to remark that in Italian there are two kinds of "Venetian":
a)veneto (which is from the Veneto in general, i.e. Padua, Verona, etc.)
b)veneziano (which is from Venice proper)

I think that long ago it was possible to use "veneziano" also for someone from the Veneto (once called "Venezia Euganea), from Trentino (once called "Venezia Tridentina") and from "Venezia Giulia" (together they were the so-called "le tre Venezie"), but nowadays this usage is archaic. http://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tre_Venezie

I've been away from this forum for months, for the simple reason that the laptop I'm using did not have it bookmarked. Such a lot to catch up on here (such a lot to tell you - but after my next lesson!). Just wanted to say I had no idea the Beeb had bought Il Giovane Montalbano, so I must tell my students.

I'll also tell them it's time they joined the forum, what with all the new free lessons etc.
