che questa sia una delle bombe....

Post by jade » Fri Feb 15, 2008 6:09 pm

"Si pensa che questa sia una delle bombe piu grandi ancora inesplose che si siano mai trovate a Milano."

I have trouble to understand this sentence, especially the part of " questa sia una delle bombe piu grandi", are we talking about single or plural here? Literally, how is it translated in English?

Grazie.

Hi Jade,

one of the bombs .... piu' grandi refers to bombs questa sia una ... sia refers to one of ... the rest of the sentence is in the plural because it refers to bombs.

You think that this is one of the bombs more important still live (active) that have ever been found in Milan.

Piu' grandi has several meanings. I am not sure that I have chosen the correct one here. Any help would be appreciated.

I will have a go, stand back and wait for corrections!
Regarding the part which confuses you, I think it's "this is one of the biggest unexploded bombs ever found in Milan".
una delle-one of the, bombe piu' grandi-biggest bombs

Am I on the right track folks?

EDIT- Sorry Roby, didn't see your post

"Si pensa", although impersonal, in a way means "experts think that...". Could you say "It is thought/considered to be one of the biggest..."?

Thank you, Roby, Ladybird and Carlo, for answering my question.

una delle = one of ...

All of a sudden, the whole sentence starts making sense! Thanks!

Ciao Carlo, quanto tempo! :) Don't take my word for it, but I think for some reason "It is believed" is more common than "it is thought" in newspapers. Che ne pensano gli altri?

I would agree with you FU. For some reason it is believed sounds better, maybe even more credible.

Ciao forumuser :)

Well, "it is thought to be" doesn't do too badly on Google:

"it is thought to be the largest" 216,000 results on Google

"it is believed to be the largest" 224,000

"It is thought to be the largest octopus ever seen" BBC News

If it's good enough for the BBC... :)

Hanno la stessa significanza, non è vero? E se una frase è vista più spesso che l'altra nei giornali, non vuol dire niente, secondo me. :) :)
