Vocabulary booster exercises

Post by Chris Corbyn » Fri Aug 06, 2010 12:47 pm

Ok, time to stop being content with my Italian and start boosting my vocabulary, a little at a time. The problem right now is that when I encounter new words they don't generally stick because I'm not encountering the same words frequently enough for it to just automatically stick.

So, I'm thinking of trying an experiment. Every week I want to create a vocabulary list based on a particular subject area and then spend time reading articles in that subject area and writing my own (fictional) articles using the vocab, until hopefully it sticks. Then the following week focus on a totally different topic.

Anybody wanna join in? As an example (although it's not a subject that I'm particularly interested in) this week I'm going to focus on vocabulary related to soccer/football (il calcio).

So, here's a list of words I can come up with off the top of my head. Please feel free to add to the list if I've missed something, or to fill in the blanks which I've marked as sconosciuto. Also correct any mistakes I've made, I'll update the list.

Equipment/pitch
  • il pallone - football (the ball)
  • lo stadio - stadium
  • il campo - the pitch
  • la porta - goal (to score through)
  • il palo (della porta) - goalpost
  • la traversa - crossbar
  • la rete (della porta) - the net
  • l'area di rigore - penalty area
  • la linea - the line
  • la linea laterale - the side-line
  • la linea posteriore - the back-line
  • l'angolo - the corner (of pitch)
  • il centro - the centre (of pitch)
Technical terms
  • la partita - match/game
  • il campionato - championship/league
  • il calcio - kick
  • il gol - goal (when scored)
  • la penalità - penalty
  • il calcio di punizione - free-kick
  • essere in gioco - to be in-play
  • essere fuorigioco - to be offside
  • la rimessa in gioco - throw-in
  • il fallo - foul
  • il cartellino giallo - yellow card
  • il cartellino rosso - red card
  • il pallamano - handball
  • sconosciuto? (? la diffida ?) - warning
  • il tiro - shot
  • il punteggio - the score
  • la formazione - formation
  • la sostituzione - substitution
  • il contrasto - tackle
  • il colpo di testa - header
  • il passaggio - pass
People
  • la squadra - team
  • l'arbitro - referee
  • il guardalinee - linesman
  • il giocatore/calciatore - player
  • il capitano - captain
  • il portiere - goalkeeper
  • il difensore - defender
  • la centrocampista - mid-fielder
  • l'attaccante - striker
  • la riserva - substitute/reserve
  • sconosciuto? ( ? la folla/massa ?) - the crowd
  • il tifoso/la tifosa - supporter
Verbs
  • lanciare - to shoot
  • segnare - to score
  • lanciarsi - to dive
  • parare (un gol) - to save (a goal)
  • tirare calci - to kick
  • colpire di testa - to head(butt)
  • passare - to pass
The idea is that in about a week's time I come back and write some fictional story (like a news article) that makes use of this vocabulary.

As far as reading topics about il calcio goes, just look in the sports section of any Italian newspaper :)

Chris, midfielder is centrocampista, warning may be ammonimento, and I would go with folla/massa, although I would not be at all sure on that! :)

This is an excellent post, particularly with the theme of football as you have mentioned. I am a Big supporter of English Italian, and Spanish football and this has helped me out so much.

Thanx. From Ricci
