L05: PART 2 - INDEFINITE ADVERBS OF TIME

In the first Part of this Lesson we explained the difference between definite and indefinite adverbs of time and went on to look at the definite ones. In this second Part, we look at some of the more common the indefinite adverbs of time and as usual give examples of how they can be used.
Indefinite adverbs of time
ora, adesso - now
ancora - still, yet
subito - immediately
presto - soon, early
tardi / in ritardo - late
sempre - always
per sempre - for ever, always
mai - never, ever
prima - before, earlier
dopo - after
poi - after, then
allora - then
immediatemente - immediately
spesso - often
raramente - rarely
già - already
Examples
È possibile comprare una nuova macchina adesso (ora)?
Is it possible to buy a new car now?
Non so ancora quando i miei arrivino
I still don’t know when my parents will arrive
Non sono ancora arrivati i miei genitori?
Have my parents arrived yet?
Siccome è molto importante che informiamo Signor Verde della decisione al più presto possibile, gli farò visita subito (immediatemente)
Because/Since it is very important to see Mr Green as soon as possible, I will visit him immediately
Domattina ho bisogno di alzarmi presto
I need to get up early tomorrow morning
Voglio andare presto in Italia
I want to go to Italy soon
È tardi. Voglio andare a casa
It’s late. I want to go home
Sono in ritardo, mi spiace, ma c’erano problemi con i treni
I am late, I’m sorry, but there were problems with the trains
I miei vicini discutono sempre. Non sembrano mai contenti
My neighbours always quarrel. They never seem happy
Ti amerò per sempre
I will love you for ever / I will always love you
Mai dire mai
Never say never
Non riuscimmo a venire prima
We were not able to come earlier
Siamo andati al ristorante dopo che avevamo visto il film
We went to the restaurant after we had seen the film
Sogno spesso di andare in Italia
I often dream of going to Italy
Vado raramente a letto prima delle undici
I rarely go to bed before eleven
Come poi risulto, mia sorella aveva già comprato i biglietti per il concerto
As it turned out, my sister had already bought the tickets for the concert
NOTE:
Both prima and dopo are often used with the preposition di:
Sono usciti prima di noi
They went out before us
Siamo usciti dopo di loro
We went out after them
